At Southern Water, we’re on a mission to protect and enhance the natural environment while delivering essential water and wastewater services. As our Senior BNG Advisor, you’ll be at the heart of this transformation—helping us meet our commitments under the Environment Act and embedding sustainability into everything we do.

Job Overview

We’re excited to announce a newly created opportunity for a Senior Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Advisor to join our Capital Delivery team and help shape the future of environmental sustainability at Southern Water. In this pivotal role, you’ll work alongside our BNG Lead to embed biodiversity net gain into major infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with the Environment Act while driving innovative, nature-positive solutions. You’ll use cutting-edge GIS tools, including ESRI ArcGIS Pro, to deliver accurate mapping and data that influence planning decisions, and collaborate with ecologists, planners, and industry specialists to set new standards for environmental excellence. If you’re passionate about making a real impact and want to be part of a forward-thinking team, this is your chance to lead change and protect biodiversity for generations to come.

Responsibilities will include:

    • Work closely with our BNG Lead to deliver biodiversity net gain across capital and major projects.
    • Use ESRI ArcGIS Pro to create accurate mapping and spatial data that drives planning decisions.
    • Support biodiversity metric calculations and reporting, ensuring compliance and consistency.
    • Collaborate with ecologists, planners, and project teams to integrate BNG into design and delivery.
    • Build strong relationships with local authorities and industry specialists to champion best practice.

About You

    • Strong knowledge of BNG principles and practical delivery, including the Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
    • Solid experience with GIS platforms (ideally ESRI ArcGIS Pro).
    • A degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Ecology, Conservation Biology, or related field.
    • Excellent communication skills and a strategic mindset.
    • Bonus points if you have:
    • Experience in environmental compliance or planning systems.
    • Interest in Python for data analysis.
    • Membership of a professional body (IEMA, CIEEM, CIWEM).

Package

This role will be full time Monday to Friday 37 hours a week.

We are offering a salary of up to £50,000 per annum depending on skills and experience as well as other benefits including:

    • Generous pension up to 11% company contribution
    • 25 days annual leave
    • Life assurance equal to 4x salary
    • Salary sacrifice electric car scheme (after 6 months service)
    • Health Cash Plan
    • Full funded eye tests
    • Two paid volunteering days a year
    • Occupational health service
    • Discounts with over 800 popular retailers
    • Digital GP service
    • Study support may be available for job-related qualifications
    • Competitive maternity leave and flexible return to work options
    • Cycle to work scheme

Does this opportunity excite you but you’re not 100% sure if you meet all the requirements for the role? Or are you concerned that ‘normal’ office hours aren’t possible given your personal circumstances? Whilst we can’t accommodate every flexible working request, we’ll try to find a practical solution. So why not engage with us and find out more about this role?

Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, because delivering water for life is our core purpose. To achieve this, we need 24/7 support in place to resolve incidents quickly and efficiently. All our employees understand the importance of out-of-hours incident support – because when problems appear, fixing them is our top priority. Joining the Southern Water family means you’ll become part of our incident support team. During your interview, your manager will speak to you about any incident support rotas that apply to your position.
